The ambitious computer game project, Star Citizen, has raised $700 million from more than 5.24 million backers, marking a new fundraising milestone.
This significant event encourages us to give this 2012 announcement of a multiplayer space trading and combat simulation game another look. Even with this outstanding financial accomplishment, a release date still looks a very long way off.
To say that Star Citizen is one of the most contentious video game projects ever would be an understatement, given the harsh criticism and even charges that it is a hoax. Once intended to be a single project, it has subsequently divided into two: the single-player game Squadron 42 and the Star Citizen persistent universe massively multiplayer online game.
It’s not like there hasn’t been any news regarding the game in the past ten years. In fact, in March of this year, backers were given a sneak peek into the game’s development by Chris Roberts, CEO of Cloud Imperium Games, which stoked expectations that it would be released shortly. A player by the name of “MrTrash” managed to travel interstellarly through a wormhole, indicating that a major technological milestone was within reach. This is a critical step towards the MMO’s 1.0 release.
Speaking of the studio itself, aside from the contentious nature of the game, former producer Annie Bouffard referred to it as a “very toxic company” and it was rumoured to have let go of other staff members. In addition, the company announced in January that Todd Papy, a Game Director who had worked on Star Citizen for nine years, was leaving.
