Due to its rising popularity, spammers prefer to use WhatsApp. Everyone, from businesses to con artists, has switched from SMS to WhatsApp to contact potential consumers via unsolicited calls and messages. Spam control must be given top priority on the Meta-owned platform, as my colleague Karandeep Singh pointed out in January 2023. A few months later, it was discovered that WhatsApp was testing a new function that would make ignoring spam calls simpler. This option is currently being rolled out together with a new Privacy Checkup tool to strengthen the security of your WhatsApp account.
With WhatsApp’s new “Silence Unknown Callers” feature, spam calls from people not in your phone book will be automatically screened and ignored. In this way, you can use your phone without being interrupted by the scammers’ incoming call notification. In case you need to get in touch with the person, you can always discover such numbers in your call history.
When it is enabled for your account, WhatsApp will automatically block all incoming calls from unidentified numbers because this feature is activated by default. This is a crucial move that will help to make the network more safe given how scammers are using WhatsApp to target unwary users in Asian nations.
A new Privacy Checkup tool has also been made available by WhatsApp so you can evaluate the different privacy settings and make sure your privacy is not being compromised. Setting up who may contact you, who can see your online status, and enabling 2FA protection for your WhatsApp account are all included in this. It also helps to safeguard your personal data.
None of these choices are very novel, but Privacy Checkup groups them all together in a single section.
