On Monday, SpaceX, under the leadership of Elon Musk, revealed the milestone of sending its first X post from space through Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellites. This achievement follows the recent feat of sending the company’s first text messages from space. SpaceX is gearing up to launch its mobile phone service to customers later this year, with the goal of eliminating cellular dead zones globally.
SpaceX, the operator of the Starlink satellite constellations in Earth’s orbit, announced that it successfully sent a post to Elon Musk’s social media platform X using one of the company’s Direct-to-Cell satellites in space. The post included a message indicating, “This post was sent through a SpaceX Direct to Cell satellite in space,” accompanied by a satellite emoji and timestamped at 1 a.m. EST.
Ben Longmier, a SpaceX engineer and co-leader of the Starlink Direct to Cell program, verified that it was the team’s inaugural posting on X via the satellites. Longmier also shared a picture of tree cover in a “small valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains,” taken earlier in the day when the team had been engaged in direct messages (DMs) on X.
It remains uncertain whether Longmier’s post or the team’s direct messages (DMs) were also transmitted via the satellites or if the SpaceX post was sent from the same location and under similar forested conditions. Elon Musk extended congratulations to the team for the accomplishment and clarified that the post “was made from a normal mobile phone straight to a SpaceX satellite, with no special equipment in between!”
