Microsoft is incorporating a new chatbot button into select Windows keyboards to facilitate user participation in what the firm referred to as “the AI transformation.”

Starting this month, some Windows 11 personal computers will have redesigned keyboards with a “Copilot key” that activates Microsoft’s AI companion, according to a blog post by Yusuf Mehdi, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for consumer products at Microsoft.

“Making 2024 the year of the AI PC,” as Mehdi puts it, the new key represents the first significant overhaul of the Windows PC keyboard in almost thirty years.

“Nearly 30 years ago, we introduced the Windows key to the PC keyboard that enabled people all over the world to interact with Windows,” stated the executive. “We see this as another transformative moment in our journey with Windows where Copilot will be the entry point into the world of AI on the PC.”

The Copilot button will be unveiled at the CES technology trade event in Las Vegas later this month. As of right now, Microsoft has not revealed which computer makers will offer the Copilot button.  Customers should be able to access the key on a few of the company’s own devices later this month, including the upcoming Surface tablets, according to the corporation.

The New York Times filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, claiming that the companies violated the outlet’s copyrights by using its content to train AI models without authorization. This led to Microsoft’s push to enhance the AI experience for PC users.
